Brother-Eagle from Database-Brothers, Inc. (DBI) is a monitoring application that can watch over multiple DB2 and/or Oracle databases. It examines multiple performance characteristics and metrics of the DBs and correlates them into health and efficiency scores, which are then displayed in a clickable, scrolling, stock-ticker like fashion that can be drilled into for further information.
The application is deployed on a Windows machine (with .NET) and operates as a client against the monitored DBs. Supported databases for monitoring include Oracle 9.2/10G and DB2 8.2/9, on Linux, AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, and Windows machines.
Multiple database metrics can be monitored by the application, each can be clicked to receive further plain text advice about what the metric itself indicates, typical ranges for the metric, and potential remedies should the metric become unusual (such remedies may include either recommended database or end user adjustments). Each of the database types (Oracle and DBS) includes its own set of examined metrics; examples include Average Result Set Size, Index Read Efficiency, Average Disk Write Time, and Sorts per Transaction, among others. The complete list of monitored metrics as well as the plain text advice offered for each can be examined directly on the vendor's Web site.
Brother-Eagle is initially offered in two versions: Standard, and Pro.
The Standard version is offered as a free adware download (site registration required), and includes the above features, as well as a "customizable user interface." The Pro version offers all the features of the Standard version (minus the ad) and also provides the ability to add both customizable metrics as well as customized advice for the metrics. Additionally, unneeded metrics can be removed; and the Pro version also includes one year of E-mail based technical support.
Brother-Eagle is available now. The Standard version is free; the Pro version is currently priced at $89 (a promotional price that expires at the end of November, 2006; at which time the price is expected to revert to the standard price of $129).
